Look at this photo. This was shown in the trailer of the bollywood movie ‘Rocky aur Rani ki Prem Kahini’. I found it disgraceful. This is the love story of a punjabi boy and a bengali girl. Every community has its own norms, culture, food, festival and very few may match. It is well understood and can be potrayed in a decent manner.
In this scene the hero went to the potrate of Rabindranath Tagore as he thinks the person in this photo must be the grandfather of the heroine. Director of this movie thinks that the hero is punjabi and it is quite normal for him to being the ignorant of Rabindranath Tagore. But is it? Is it really funny??
Absolutely not. It is either demeaning the brain of punjabis or glorifying the ignorance of those people who do not know about that great man who wrote the national anthem of two nations-India and Bangladesh. Infact national anthem of Sri Lanka had been influenced by the work of Rabindranath Tagore. This has been taught from primary school but hero of this flim yet to know this information. For so long Bollywood used to demean various linguistic communities and hindu tradition. They always potray punjabis as an ignorant and funny community but the reality is different.
Rabindranath tagore not only just a bengali but also a globally known first asian noble laureate. You may not read his biography or any of its work but being complete ignorant of him is shameful, specially as an Indian.
